Our story
The Lions Club of London Golders Green was founded on 9 May 1979. For more than four decades, we have proudly served our local community and supported humanitarian projects around the world. We are especially proud that several of our Charter Members continue to be active members of the club today, demonstrating an enduring commitment to our motto, "We Serve."
Our Charter President was Lion Natubhai Patel, and the club was established with over 35 Charter Members. Since those early days, successive Presidents and dedicated members have led countless service projects and fundraising initiatives that have made a lasting difference to people's lives.
One of our first major international projects was the construction of a medical dispensary in Tanzania, which continues to serve the local community today.
During our first decade, the club also:
- Sponsored educational trips for local schools.
- Supported local cultural and community activities.
- Contributed to leprosy-related projects in India.
- Established eye camps in Africa and India.
- Donated wheelchairs to hospitals and those in need.
As the club has grown, so too has the scale of our impact. Over the years we have proudly supported many significant projects, including:
- Donating minibuses for disabled children and the Asian Disabled Association in Barnet.
- Contributing towards the establishment of the Cherry Lodge Cancer Care Centre in Barnet.
- Sending dialysis machines to Africa.
- Building classrooms for schools in Tanzania.
- Supporting street children projects and artificial limb programmes in India.
- Making donations to Great Ormond Street Hospital.
- Supporting numerous local, national and international charitable causes.
These projects were carefully planned with long-term sustainability in mind, and many continue to benefit communities today. We are proud that our work has made a positive and lasting impact both locally and internationally.
The ethos of our club has always been to live by the Lions motto, "We Serve," helping those less fortunate while building friendships, fellowship and a strong sense of community.
We also embrace the philosophy of our founder, Melvin Jones, who believed that while serving others, Lions should also enjoy fellowship, friendship and the satisfaction that comes from making a difference. Our club has always combined service with fun, creating lifelong friendships while extending the Lions family.
As part of our commitment to strengthening Lionism, we have sponsored and helped establish several new clubs:
- Lions Club of London Kingsbury (1989)
- Lions Club of Moor Park (2001)
- Our own Lioness Club (1997)
We are delighted that these clubs continue to thrive, and we are proud to have played a role in their success and growth.
Many of our members have also served Lions International beyond our own club, taking on leadership roles at District and Multiple District level, including:
- District Governor
- Region Chairperson
- Zone Chairperson
- District Treasurer
- Youth Exchange Officer
- Multiple District Treasurer
- and many other leadership positions within District 105A.
Today, more than 45 years after our formation, the Lions Club of London Golders Green continues to build on its proud heritage. Through friendship, service and community spirit, we remain dedicated to improving lives, supporting those in need and making a positive difference—both locally and around the world.
